The LTSC Union Showcase 99/00 Boys team is headed to the US Youth Soccer National Tournament in Frisco, Texas, July 25 as Region II champion after bringing home the title June 28 from Sioux Falls, S.D.

The Lyons Township Soccer Club U18 team has advanced further than any team in the recent history of the club, which includes players from Chicago’s western suburbs. The LTSC boys won their final three matches of the regional competition against top teams from other states in Region II.

The LTSC team is composed of soon-to-be seniors at area high schools including Lyons Township, Hinsdale Central, Nazareth, Downers Grove North, St. Ignatius and York. The team has played in the USYS Midwest Regional League the last several years and in the National League in the 2016-17 season. The group started to come together 11 years ago as an LTSC U7 developmental team and has grown since then, achieving a high degree of success in league play, in the state, and in highly competitive tournaments around the country.

In Sioux Falls, LTSC Union Showcase won its final two matches June 27 and 28 in penalty kicks against highly rated teams it has faced numerous times with mixed results. In the semifinal, LTSC edged out Nationals Union 99 Black (Michigan) in PKs. In the final match, LTSC took on last year’s Region II champion, OP Green (Ohio South), the two sides ending regulation and two overtime periods knotted at 1-1. This put the decision to PKs, where LTSC emerged the winner 5-4 after eight rounds of kicks from the mark.

Earlier in the tournament, LTSC came out of group play undefeated, beating FC Pride Elite Red (Indiana) 4-1, Pacesetter SC 1999 Villa Red (Ohio North) 3-1, and Javanon SC 99 (Kentucky) 1-0. The OP Green team won its group and defeated FC United Select (Illinois State Cup 2017 champion) 1-1 in the semifinal to earn its spot in the final.

In state play over the years, LTSC Union Showcase 99/00 has finished as Illinois State Cup runner-up multiple times, although never winning, and has advanced to USYS Regional play three times. The team also played one year in the US Club Soccer Regionals. In the 2017 State Cup, the boys suffered a disappointing semifinal loss but earned a spot in the USYS Regionals for finishing second in the MRL Premier I Division, with a 4-1-2 record this spring. Last fall in National League play, the team tied for second in its division, gaining valuable experience facing teams from Arizona, California, Delaware, Georgia, Ohio, South Carolina and Virginia.

The LTSC Union 99/00 roster for 2016-17 includes Sander Adriani, Owen Allen, Charlie Clarke, Sam DeBoer, Quinn Fraser, Eric Gradilla, Tiernan Guinn, Charles Hall, Nicholas Jacobs, Luke Lusson, Adam McGahay, Brady McKay, Isaiah Nieves, Philip Panopoulos, Jack Rickards, Tate Riordan, Nathan Rusk, Matt Vear and Christian Waldshmidt. The team is coached by Paul Murphy, head coach, and Andrew Parry, assistant coach.

Two LTSC players were recognized by the USYS as leading scorers at Regionals. Jack Richards finished with six goals, while Nathan Rusk put four in the net. The team has been highly regarded for its strong defense and for stellar goalkeeping by Matt Vear.

“Ten years ago, we set a club goal of sending a team to Nationals in the decade that followed, and it’s exciting to see that happen,” said Jo Hearn, LTSC executive director. “We’ve wanted to see this team go all the way, since they have been together so long and are a great group on and off the soccer field.”

Lyons Township Soccer Club, founded in 1986, has 35 teams U8 to U18 and is the oldest competitive soccer club in the Chicago area with a full-time, professional coaching staff. More information about LTSC is available at www.ltsc.us
